Discover how Bravo Java changed Spain's way of shopping for shoes, and how the third generation of shoe experts continue the legacy today.

We each have our own story. The path behind us marks where we’ve been and helps carry us where we’re headed. But what if the shoes on your feet, the ones supporting you along your journey, have their own story to tell? If you went shopping for shoes at Bravo Java in Spain, they certainly do.

Bravo Java’s story began on a street called Calle Caballero de Gracia in Madrid. At this spot in 1942, José Bravo Atienza opened his first shoe store named Bravo. Quickly, this store became known as a pioneering force when it came to quality shoes for men and women. Believe it or not, what was once a little shoe shop in Madrid paved the way for a legacy, and now serves important figures near and far.

Bravo Java is now an institution, standing out for excellent quality and timeless style. We take traditionally uncomfortable styles and thrill customers with unparalleled comfort. Let’s step into the past, for a bit more on the inspiration behind our brand.

When shopping for shoes in Madrid changed forever

José Bravo Atienza opened his shop in complicated post-war times, but that didn’t stop him from having big aspirations. As a natural-born entrepreneur, he had a vision for his shop and worked from the time he was young to turn it into Madrid’s best spot to buy shoes for women, and men too.

Bravo decided he wanted shopping for shoes to be a new kind of experience. Rather than the feeling of stepping into a storage unit filled with shoeboxes, he wanted the customer to enjoy a luxurious experience. For this reason, he decided to remove all shoeboxes from the shop. By opening up the shop floor, he turned a visit to his shop into a special moment, more reminiscent of grabbing a drink in a stylish parlour than the traditional experience of shopping for shoes. This decision changed the way people bought shoes across the country forever.

The adventure continues

Over the years, the Bravo family continued to open new branches, and by 1957 José and his sons Carlos and Angelwere operating under the new name Bravo Java. They added ‘Java’ to their surname to pay homage to the quality leather produced in Java, Indonesia. The name stuck, and today you’re likely to see Bravo Java signs lit up around Madrid and Barcelona.

From Winston Churchill’s wife to the emperor of Ethiopia, and Sophia Loren to Spanish royalty, Bravo Java has proudly crafted shoes for some of the most celebrated personalities of its time. However, Bravo always claimed that elegance begins with your feet, and shopping for shoes at his store gives this air of style to the Spanish public at affordable prices.
